The 2-2 start to the season served little notice that the 2002 Trojans would finish by losing in the Division 3 state title game. But they won eight of their next nine, including a 28-20 upset of Fort Defiance in a state semifinal. Group AA all-state running back George Jones ran for almost 1,900 yards and 21 TDs. Jones broke for a 50-yard score in the semifinal after lining up at punter, an opening Trojans coach Fred Birchett had spotted on film. Jones' backfield mate in the pesky double-wing, Travis Lee, ran for 147 yards in the state semi, including a 75-yard touchdown.
