Friday night was an exhibition in contrasting styles at Todd Stadium.

While Woodside was content to simply run the ball, visiting Denbigh took to the air — despite a soggy field and a persistent misting rain. The Wolverines' style prevailed, thanks to 277 rushing yards and five scores on the ground, as they beat Denbigh 35-7.

"We figured during pregame warmups (that) running the ball would be better for us," Woodside coach Danny Dodson said. "We can run or pass effectively under normal conditions, but the weather made the decision easy."

The Wolverines (6-1, 5-1 Peninsula District) took the lead for good with 2:01 left in the first half, after recovering a Denbigh fumble during an attempted punt. Three plays and 15 yards later, Marquis Frazier ran up the middle for a 1-yard score to put Woodside up 14-7.

Denbigh (4-3, 3-3) had tied the score 7-7 with 10:13 left in the first half, when Allen Simon threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Lavon Pearson in the middle of the end zone. Simon's only touchdown of the night came as part of a 15-for-36 passing effort for 102 yards.

"I was surprised (Denbigh passed so much)," Dodson said. "But that's what they do well, and we knew they weren't big runners, but I thought the weather would change their plan more."

Woodside passed just seven times on the night, the first coming when Aaron Evans found Frazier for a 13-yard gain that set up the go-ahead touchdown. Evans also ran for a 5-yard score in the third quarter and a 4-yard keeper in the fourth quarter, finishing the night with two rushing touchdowns and 132 yards on the ground, while also completing 5-of-7 for 71 yards.

The Wolverines struck first with 5:23 left in the first quarter, when Jarrell Cooper capped an eight-play drive by running left for 12 yards to give Woodside a 7-0 lead. Cooper also scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter for his second touchdown of the night.

Juxtaposed with the irony of Woodside's changing game plan was the fact that Dodson wore the same thing he always wears on the sidelines during games: khaki shorts.

"Why not?" he said with a grin. "I always do this, just like my high school coach did. Why change?"
