NEWPORT NEWS — JayQuan Lassiter ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns while Tyris Walker ran for 105 and one score as Woodside survived a frantic final six minutes to defeat Warwick 27-21 in Peninsula District football at Todd Stadium on Thursday night.

The Wolverines bounced back from a loss at Booker T. Washington that ended their 15-game regular-season winning streak.

Warwick quarterback Josh Butler connected with William Turner for a 20-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left to cut the Raiders' deficit to six, but the ensuing onside kick failed. The teams combined for 28 points in the final 5 minutes, 50 seconds.

The Wolverines scored the lone points of the first half on a 76-yard drive that covered eight plays and 3:39. Lassiter covered the final 19 yards of the drive with his first touchdown run.

The extra-point attempt failed and Woodside held a 6-0 lead with 19 seconds left in the first quarter. Woodside quarterback Darius Howell put his team in prime position with a 28-yard scamper to the Warwick 24 two plays before Lassiter's touchdown.

In the third quarter, Woodside took advantage of a short Warwick punt to start a drive on the Raiders' 32. On the eighth running play, Quincy Jones pushed his way for the final 10 yards and a 13-0 Wolverine lead with 4:17 left.

Warwick (0-3, 0-1) went on a 51-yard scoring drive that ended the third quarter. Butler, after a pair of runs, connected with David Smith on a 23-yard pass to the 20. Then Cardon Johnson burst through several tacklers and scored as the third quarter ended to bring Warwick to 13-7. He ended the game with 152 yards on 13 carries.

Donta Butler intercepted a Warwick pass to snuff a drive with 6:04 left, setting up the Wolverines on their 15. Walker took care of the next 85 yards as he scored on the ensuing play to put Woodside up 20-7 with 5:50 left.

The Raiders responded following a 55-yard Woodside punt to the Warwick 6. After a 13-yard Butler run, Johnson broke loose and outran the secondary on a 75-yard scamper to cut the lead to 20-14 with 2:17 left.

Lassiter scored on a 2-yard run after the Wolverines recovered an onside kick at the Warwick 49. He started the drive with a 39-yard run and scored with 70 seconds left for a 27-14 lead.
