Hampton native Francena McCorory and rising VCU senior Kiara Porter from Tabb High were among 16 women advancing to the 400-meter semifinals at the U.S. outdoor track and field championships in Sacramento, Calif.
McCorory was fifth among the preliminary finishers in 51.64 seconds Thursday, and Porter was 11th at 52.71.
In the men’s 400 prelims, Portsmouth native LaShawn Merritt was second at 45.19 seconds, and Hampton University’s Je’Von Hutchison advanced by being 15th overall at 46.21.
In the men’s 800, former U.Va. standout Robby Andrews advanced by winning his heat. He was 19th overall at 1:49.78.
