The Bay Rivers District players' stay in the state Group AA singles tournament went shorter than they had hoped Thursday morning on Radford University's courts.
Tabb junior Chiraag Shetty, making his first state appearance, succumbed to a comeback and lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in a semifinal to sophomore Wesley Wong of Freedom High in Loudoun County.
O'Keefe, who will play in college for Radford, won all four of his finals in straight sets, and he's favored to lead Salem to its first team crown since 1994 and join Will Drougas for their third consecutive doubles title.
Thursday's semifinal against the hard-hitting Wong was the only singles loss of the year for Shetty, who won the Region I title after twice being the runner-up. He's also a two-time Bay Rivers singles champion.
In the girls semifinals, York standout Wiktoria Plawska's inexperience perhaps caught up to her. She lost 6-1, 6-2 to Region II champion Headley Wilson of Winchester's James Wood High.
Plawska was a freshman in a bracket that otherwise included three seniors. Kristin Harter of Hidden Valley, a Roanoke girl in her fourth consecutive state final, was aiming for her second title in the championship match.
Her opponent was Wilson, who had never reached the singles final but who won two state doubles crowns with Kari Pope, who grew up in Isle of Wight County before her family moved to Winchester.
The team semifinals and doubles semis are set for Friday. The Jamestown boys have the unenviable task of facing Salem at 9 a.m. on Virginia Tech's courts, while the Jamestown girls will try to upend defending champion Hidden Valley at 9 a.m. on Radford's campus.
In Friday afternoon's doubles semis, Lafayette's Chris Ford and Cole Fairbanks will meet of E.C. Glass' John James and Scottie Taylor on the Hokies' courts.
Plawska and Jessica Lee will face Stuarts Draft sisters Jessica and Elena Miller. Jessica, Stuarts Draft's valedictorian, lost to Harter in a singles semifinal, and Elena is a freshman.
