Warwick’s Younique Upchurch, a 6-foot-4 center who didn’t play basketball until her ninth-grade year, has committed to Division II Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C.
Upchurch averaged 12.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a senior and made the All-Group 5A South team. She carries a 3.3 grade-point average, according to Raiders coach Vanessa Starks.
“There’s still a big upside to Younique because she started playing so late,” Starks said. “When she started playing, I’m sure she was well over 300 pounds. She’s lost a lot of that, and there’s definitely a big upside for where she’s goingto go.
“What I really like about her is she has a point-guard mentality. I attribute that to not having played in pickup street-ball games, so she learned the game from the bottom up. She’s definitely a student of the game. She really has a basketball mind for being so young.”

Grassfield’s baseball team will be under new management for the rest of the season. For the second time in three seasons, assistant Bret Lieberman replaced Shaun Todd as head coach, the Virginian-Pilot reported last week.
Officials offered no explanation to the Pilot for the abrupt change, saying only that Lieberman would finish the rest of the season as head coach. In May 2012, the school made the same switch, also with no explanation. Todd returned to coach the 2013 season.
