But the Islanders (3-1, 3-0 district) added some flair you expect to see more of in, say, the Peninsula District, courtesy of halfback Cody Hutchison. Hutchison turned two seemingly routine pass receptions into touchdowns of 20 and 52 yards with a nice array of spin moves.
"It was a hot blitz underneath and I followed (tight end) William Haskins," said Hutchison, whose first score gave the Islanders a 14-0 lead with 1:50 to play in the first half. "He knocked a dude down and that opened it up for me."
Hutchison's take was pretty much the same on screen pass he turned into the 52-yard TD to give Poquoson a 21-0 lead little more than a minute later. Sure his spin move to the inside to break a tackle was a factor on the play, he said, but so was the blocking.
"Jay Diggs made a great open-field block on that play and the linemen did a great job of blocking, too," Hutchison said. "I try to give as much second effort as I can to help us get a win."
Most of the rest of Poquoson's offense was about running the ball: 42 times for 206 yards. The Islanders defense pitched a second consecutive shutout, allowing the Eagles just 59 total yards even without star linebacker Dylan Hill, sidelined by a muscle pull.
Jamestown (2-2, 1-2) was bitten far more by the injury bug, opening the game minus two starting offensive linemen. Starting quarterback Alex Hunter left early in the second quarter when he was shook up being tackled, before starting running back Alex Peck was sidelined early in the second half by an apparent elbow injury.
With so many key players missing for the Eagles the Poquoson defense dominated, with Tee McConnell getting two of the four interceptions. McConnell's first pick, off a Luke Hill deflection, would set up his 12-yard touchdown pass to Haskins early in the first quarter.
His second interception came in the third quarter and set up Thomas Garris' 10-yard touchdown run to make it 28-0. Like Hutchison, McConnell spread the credit around.
"Our front four was ridiculously good tonight," McConnell said of defensive linemen Garris, Haskins, Stephen Boyer and Baxter Bristow. "They put a lot of pressure on the quarterback and then the secondary gets involved."
Austin Smith and Jake Mauld added interceptions for the Islanders in the fourth quarter. So, even after his three touchdown passes and Hutchison's flair, McConnell was talking about defense.
"Being a quarterback, it's nice to know we can shut out a lot of teams," McConnell said. "The way we're all flying to the football is a lot different than last year.
"I'd love to see us keep it up."
