Bay Rivers District champion Smithfield put two players on the Group AA All-State Softball first team, while AA state tournament quarterfinalist Tabb put another on the first team. Smithfield sophomore pitcher Sydney Gay was joined on the first team by teammate Allie Nowak, a sophomore outfielder, and Tabb senior infielder Kayla St. John.

Gay had a 20-3 record and set what is believed to be an area record with 294 strikeouts in 166 innings pitched. She batted .427 with 32 hits, 18 runs and 18 RBI.

Nowak batted .431 and stole 12 bases for the Packers. St. John hit .500 with a .532 on-base percentage for Tabb.

"The thing about both girls is that they work so hard," Smithfield coach Cathy Riddick said of Gay and Nowak. "After they learned they made all-state, Sydney said they still have room for improvement.

"Both girls spend extra time working on their game after practice. That's why they are the caliber players they are."

Honorable mention honors went to Smithfield infielder Allie Newman, who made just one error in 2013, Grafton infielder Hannah Olson - who batted .506 with 16 doubles and 33 runs in the regular season - and Bruton base-stealing phenom DaSha Hill.
