Lafayette High track and field star Deborah Allison has committed to a full scholarship to run for Viriginia Military Institute in Lexington. The commitment is part of a big week for Allison, who will start for Lafayette in its Group 3A volleyball state tournament semifinal game on Thursday at VCU against Hidden Valley.

Allison, who carries a 3.5 grade point average, said the combination athletic/academic scholarship to VMI will pay for virtually all of her expenses. She said that VMI coach Zack Scott is recruiting her primarily has a hurdler and heptathlete.

Allison finished fourth in the AA outdoor state meet this past season in the 100 hurdles, running a best of 15.13 seconds in the event. She ran a personal best 8.73 to finish third in the 55 hurdles in the AA indoor state meet.

She scored state meet points indoors and outdoors for Lafayette relay teams and qualified for the state meet in the long and triple jumps.

"At first I didn't think this was really happening," Allison said of the scholarship offer. "I know that I'm blessed to have this opportunity.

"My grandparents, stepfather and family friends that I lived have all been in the military. I love the structure, discipline and organizaton of the military.

"I even love the Rat Line (VMI's freshman initiation tradition). The examples of those in the military have helped me learn that making myself better is my responsibility."
