Bethel's girls were in third place and Warwick's boys were in eighth, leading Peninsula District schools in the Eastern Region track and field championships through Friday's action at Darling Stadium.

In the boys' division, Hampton was 12th. In the girls' standings, Menchville was fifth, Phoebus 13th and Kecoughtan 15th.

The two-day event concludes Saturday, with field events beginning at 9:30 a.m. and running finals starting at noon. The top six individuals per event will move to next week's state Group AAA championships in Richmond. The top three relay teams also will advance.

There were several outstanding efforts by PD athletes.

Bethel won the only girls' running final of the day, taking the 4x800-meter relay in 9 minutes, 36.72 seconds.

Menchville's Melissa Wilson won the pole vault by clearing 11 feet. She has signed an academic/athletic scholarship with the University of South Florida in Tampa.

About 600 athletes from 40 schools are taking partin the competition, according to co-director Ray Smith. They represented four districts.
