Western Branch pulled off a sweep at the Eastern Region Track and Field championship meet at Todd Stadium on Saturday. The girls team won its seventh consecutive Eastern Region title and the boys now have won back-to-back titles.

"We have high expectations for the teams," head coach Claude Toukene said. "Today they really put forth the effort. It was a total team effort for us."

Western Branch's boys team was led by senior sprinter Byron Robinson, who took home gold in the 300-meter hurdles. He lost his lead in the last 10 meters of the 200 and finished .03 seconds behind Michael Cherry of Oscar Smith. Overall, Robinson has his sights set high for the rest of the track season.

"We're happy, but not content," Robinson said of his team's performance. "We've planned for states and that's our main goal."

On the girls side, the Bruins shined most in the relays. The girls team cruised in the 4x800 and just edged out Great Bridge in the 4x100. Ebony White and Faith Ross took first and second in the 800, respectively.

Sprinter Carolyn Brown led Phoebus to a third-place finish with another impressive individual performance. Brown already holds state's fastest time in the 100 and beat out Kiera Brown of Great Bridge by .002 seconds. Carolyn Brown came in second to Kiera Brown in the 200, but has a good shot at redemption at the State Championship meet next week.

Hampton's Chantel Ray continued her dominance in the 100-meter hurdles as she won with a time of 13.84, her best time this season and in the state.

Woodside senior Aaron Worrell took home gold in the triple jump with a distance of 49-5 to follow up his win in the Peninsula District championship last week.
