Bids for the pre-site work at the new Page Middle School were drastically different when they were opened on Tuesday, with the low and high bidders being about $1.3 million apart.

The work entails moving dirt and erosion control and precedes installation of infrastructure such as roads, curbs and utilities. Here is the list of the bids submitted by 11 Virginia firms, according to county documents:

--E.J. Wade Construction Inc. (Mechanicsville), $1,879,566.71;

--Oyster Point Construction (Newport News), $1,924,000;

--Walter C. Via Enterprises Inc. (Mattaponi), $1,962,228.

The bids will now be reviewed by county staff before a contract is awarded.
