Biking
BikeWalk Virginia. The statewide non-profit organization educates and advocates for non-motorized transportation safety and access. In 2004, the organization merged with Virginia Trails and broadened its mission to include hikers, paddlers, equestrians and all non-motorized users of roads and trails. BikeWalk Virginia has eight local chapters; the Williamsburg chapter is Active Williamsburg Alliance. The newest BikeWalk Virginia chapter is Middle Peninsula Trails Partnership. On June 20-25, the organization's annual Bike Virginia bicycle tour will be held; this year's five-day event takes bicyclists through the Virginia cities of Bristol and Abingdon, along with Kingsport, Tenn. The featured partner this year is The Crooked Road, a non-profit that celebrates Appalachian heritage. Visit www.bikevirginia.org to register.
Biking map. The Bicycling in Virginia map features more than 800 miles of official biking routes, as well as the Virginia Capital Trail - www.virginiacapitaltrail.org -- connecting Williamsburg with Richmond and facilities for kids and families. Pedal thru petals. Bike Night at Norfolk Botanical Garden is held 4-7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Garden admission applies; bring helmets and bikes to ride 12 miles of pedestrian pathways. www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org
Best biking. Yorktown battleground tour roads and the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail have little, if any, traffic.
