Gloucester School Board Member Ann Burruss and Superintendent Ben Kiser attended a conference on Monday in Charlottesville that focused on the Virginia Board of Education's new superintendent evaluation standards.

The VSBA Hot Topic Conference was held at the Charlottesville Omni. A state spokeswoman said the Virginia Board of Education approved revised guidelines for evaluation criteria for superintendents last September.

The evaluation guidelines become effective July 1, 2014, although school divisions can implement them prior to that date, the spokeswoman said.

The seven performance standards that are part of the new guidelines include:

--Mission, vision and goals;

--Planning and assessment;

--Organizational leadership and safety;

--Communication and community relations;

--Professionalism;

--Division-wide student academic progress.
