Good eats: Atlantic City Connection sub
Newport News, with sister shops in Williamsburg and Denbigh
Hours: 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
There are plenty of good reasons why you see so many economy cars and contractor's trucks crowding the Subway Station parking lot at lunchtime.
Inside, the savvy drivers are lined up at the busy counter, drawn by a menu of nearly 2 dozen submarine sandwiches that have proven both cheap yet tantalizingly good over the past 33 years.
Signature Subs, Specialty Subs and Slim-down Subs are the focus of this locally owned shop, which serves its made-to-order fare baked hot in the oven or refreshingly cold depending on your preference. You also can get such choices as the Subway Express — which the shop touts as "Our version of a hot Italian sub, only better" — in not only the traditional half or whole-roll forms but also a deliciously overstuffed size that the menu calls "ridiculous."
Fresh-baked rolls, a choice of special oil and vinegar or creamy secret sauce and all sorts of options for extra meat, cheese and other ingredients make it easy to customize your sub if you want to. But don't ask for a ridiculous Atlantic City Connection because, as the menu says, this mouth-watering concoction of Genoa Salami, Canadian bacon, imported ham and cheeses already is.
