About half the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is found here, and the city contains the Great Dismal Swamp Canal, the nation's oldest working manmade waterway. Other parks include the Great Bridge Lock Park, where visitors can watch yachts using the lock, and the Northwest River Park, which includes a campground, trails for walking and horse-riding, miniature golf and rental boats, canoes and fishing poles.
And there's plenty of shopping, with two regional shopping malls.
