3. U.S. energy policy: A slow national suicide

In 1969, three unrelated events occurred that have since been combined with political bungling to slowly strangle the U.S. economy. Moammar Gadhafi overthrew King Idris of Libya. He nationalized Western oil company reserves with no retribution from the U.S. Sensing our weakness, all of the other OPEC nations abrogated their concession agreements with U.S. companies. The Arab producers cut back production and embargoed the U.S. because of our support for Israel. Middle East despots have been in the driver's seat ever since, and as the Arab Spring seems increasingly likely to empower Islamists, things are unlikely to get better.

  7. March: Redistricting protested; $60 million cancer center planned

Bowing to pressure from angry parents, the school board approved 10 major changes to the redistricting plan it was scheduled to approve, then pushed a vote on the plan back by a week. Except for the students moving to Red Pump Elementary School, the changes would essentially keep students at their current schools.

  21. The Markley TV Club: Final Season of 'West Wing'

My roommate Pat and I recently, for some reason, watched the final season of “The West Wing” together on Netflix, which produced a number of arguments, speculations, and asides that I have compiled in an e-mail exchange for the inaugural edition of The Markley TV Club. I realize the final season of “The West Wing” in which plucky Texas congressman Matt Santos faced off against Republican straight-talker Arnold Vinick, aired like 27 years ago or something, but so what? Y’all didn’t get me and my roommate’s commentary until right now.
