Johnstown—The Westmont Hilltop Middle School Mathcounts team won the 29th annual Johnston Regional Competition sponsored by the Johnstown Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE).
A total of 17 schools and approximately 140 students participated in this year’s event, which was held Feb. 11 on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown campus.
The individual winners were: Peter Hu, Richland Junior-Senior High School, son of Dr. Hai Hu and Dr. Ling Liang, coached by Kelly Smiach; and Doug Bender, Saltsburg Middle School, son of Tim Bender and Shelly Curry, coached by Stephanie Jake.
The team from Westmont Hilltop Middle School and the individual winners will advance to the Pennsylvania state competition being held March 23-24 in Harrisburg.
The students will be competing against the top finalists of the 23 regional competitions that are held in Pennsylvania. Winners of the state competition go on to the national competition in May.
The students and their coaches will be the guests of honor at the annual PSPE Engineers’ Week banquet being held on Feb. 22 at Pitt-Johnstown.
