"Catholic Schools Raise the Standards – The Sky is the Limit!" is the theme for the 2013-2014 National Catholic Schools Week.
St. Peter School in Somerset will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week Jan. 27 through Feb. 1. It will join the more than 2,000,000 Catholic school students in more than 7,800 Catholic schools across the nation to celebrate how Catholic education raises the standards of faith, academics and service every day for its students providing them with limitless possibilities to learn, grow and help others.
The national observance of Catholic Schools Week began in 1974. During the week students, teachers, families and staff focus on the high-quality, faith-filled education Catholic schools provide. A welcome is extended to all current families, alumni and anyone interested in learning more about St. Peter School to stop by the school's open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday. Teachers and families will be on hand to talk with interested families and student work and accomplishments will be on display.
In conjunction with Catholic Schools Week, St. Peter School will hold kindergarten and new student registrations for the 2013-2014 school year beginning Monday. Kindergarten registration will run until Feb. 8 and screenings will be scheduled after that.
All other registrations will be accepted until July 1. St. Peter School has openings in Grades K-6 for the 2013-2014 school year. Students registering for kindergarten must be 5 years old by Sept. 1. Any parent registering their child is to bring the child's birth certificate, immunization record, social security number and any baptismal certificate.
The school office is open for registrations 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and will have after school hours on Monday during the open house and Jan. 31 until 4:30 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 5. If any of these times are not convenient, the school is happy to meet with parents any other time and are encouraged to call the school at 445-6662.
St. Peter School has been providing high standards of education since 1961. The school enrolls students of all faiths, and continues to provide a quality education of academic excellence rooted in a foundation of strong faith and values with a commitment to serving each other, the community and the world around them through their lifetime.
"Parents choose our school for its high academic standards, as well as its value-based and faith-enriching education. The faith enrichment of the school speaks to not only Catholics but to many faiths of different denominations so our doors are always open to any family. Many people don't realize that on a national level, Catholic school enrollments include children of many faith backgrounds," said principal, Jill Harris, "With the addition of our kindergarten this year, we are able to have students spend their entire elementary years with our school from kindergarten to grade 6. The kindergarteners have added a wonderful new dimension to the school and the kids and teachers have done a remarkable job."
St. Peter School, a member of the Altoona Johnstown Diocese, offers grades K-6 and is certified by the Middle States Association. Students from the Somerset area as well as surrounding communities attend the school. Transportation is provided to all students, if desired, by local school districts within a certain distance of St. Peter School. The faculty is made up of seven full-time, certified teachers, a religion/phys-ed teacher, a music teacher, volunteer librarian, Title I teacher and Act 89 Reading Specialist as well as a support staff and office personnel.
"We are very blessed to have a wonderful working relationship with all the neighboring school districts and we appreciate their role in helping our school," said Harris. "Our students transition very easily to their home school districts or to other Catholic schools after they graduate from sixth grade. They are more than prepared academically and many of our graduates have gone on to be leaders in their schools in many arenas."
