SOMERSET — Somerset Area High School swim teams swept the Ligonier Valley Rams in a meet held Monday at the Golden Eagles' pool.
The Lady Eagles improved their record to 5-0 with a 104-64 victory. The boys hiked their record to 4-1 with a dominating 101-51 triumph.
The Lady Eagles were led by quadruple winners and team captains Mary Mack and Emily Schleich. Mack captured firsts in the 200 IM (2:38.84) and the 100 freestyle (1:00.95). Schleich nailed down individual wins in the 100 butterfly (1:10.42) and the 100 backstroke (1:12.25).
Both were also members of the winning 200 medley relay (2:14.05). They were joined by teammates Katie Yachere and Danielle Owens. Mack and Schleich were joined by teammates Elexsis Robison and Anna Chan in the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:23.76). Owen was first in the 50 freestyle (29.15) followed by teammate Lauren Marple (29.62).
"I am very impressed with the effort and poise the swimmers displayed," Somerset head coach Lauren Knupp said. "Coming out of Christmas training and overcoming challenges, the swimmers succeeded. I was pleased with their overall performance."
The team of Owen, Marple, Robison and Chan combined for a first place in the 200 freestyle relay (1:58.17). Marple also claimed an individual win in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.72).
Somerset boys were led by quadruple winners Josh Stoppe and Shane Ickes. Stoppe took firsts in the 50 freestyle (24.75) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.48). Ickes cemented individual wins in the 200 IM (2:39.64) and the 100 backstroke (1:15.88).
Stoppe was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:45.49) joined by teammates Brandon Williams, Christian Gehman and captain Nick Bastian.
Stoppe and Ickes were both members of the first place 400 freestyle relay (4:11.79) joined by teammates Bastian and Gehman. Ickes was a member of the winning 200 medley relay (2:12.59) along with teammates Nick Kimmel, captain Brenden Knecht and Williams. Kimmel placed second in the 200 IM (3:06.06) behind Ickes.
Gehman claimed a first place finish for the boys in the 100 butterfly (1:07.00). Knecht was second in the 100 butterfly (1:16.14) and second behind Stoppe in the 100 breaststroke (1:33.43). Bastian took another first for the boys in the 100 freestyle (57.98) followed by Williams (1:02.42).
