Charles and Teresa Johnson were not home when the fire began on the first floor of their house. Somerset, Rockwood and Listie fire departments responded to the scene.
A dog was rescued from the home upon Somerset fire department’s arrival.
Somerset fire Chief Gary Thomas said he had not performed an extensive investigation, but he said the house suffered heavy smoke damage. No damage estimates were available at this time, but Thomas described the damage as extensive. The home is insured.
Charles Johnson said the family put a lot of work into the house.
“This makes me sick,” his wife, Teresa said. Six people live in the house. Charles Johnson said they do not have anyone to stay with.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the family.
Chief Thomas said the fire was knocked down in less that 10 minutes.
“The guys did a hell of a job knocking it down as fast as they did,” he said.
Thomas said the house’s close proximity to the fire station helped. The hydrants were close by, he said. They used 750 gallons of water.
