TIRE HILL — Somerset Christian School took part in the Southwest Christian Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament on March 10. The tournament consisted of the top four teams from the league, playing in a single-elimination event.
SCS came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Lions first game was against Armbrust, the No. 4 seed. Although SCS beat Armbrust during the regular season, "The kids seemed to be a little nervous and started off slow," coach Mike Thomas said. By the time the game was over, the Lions had cruised to a 31-6 victory. Josh Knepper led the way with 12 points, followed by Eli Jano with 8. Nate Thomas, Micah Ream and Seth Shivler added the final 11 points.
In the championship game, SCS pulled out a thrilling 28 -20 win. The lead went back and forth until halfway through the second quarter. Nate Thomas connected with back-to-back 3-pointers to give SCS the lead.
"It was a great defensive effort by the whole team," coach Thomas said. "They all gave 100 percent."
Nate Thomas led the Lions in scoring with 14 points. Josh Knepper added eight, Eli Jano added four and John Barth had two.
With the tournament win, the Lions ended the season with a 9-1 mark, and a perfect 8-0 league record.
