Rockwood handed Johnstown Christian a 6-0 boys varsity soccer loss on Parent’s Day Saturday.
Charlie King, Mark Lucas and Alex Myers scored two goals apiece in the victory.
King opened the scoring with a leaping head ball off a Brad Lemmon throw in. King out jumped three players to knock the ball in behind goalie Seth Nichols.
Lucas made it 2-0 with a sharp angle shot that went in the near post side.
Nichols and the Blue Jays (1-6) defense came up huge several times before the end of the first half. Nichols stopped two point blank shots and defenders cleared two shots off rebounds.
“Seth is a first-year goalie and it has been a lot of fun to watch him improve from game to game,” head coach Dan Becker said. “The defense is a very experienced back line which continues to work hard.”
The Rockets (5-2) had a goal waived off on an offside call with 1:15 remaining in the first half.
Myers scored less than four minutes into the second half making it a 3-0 contest.
Lucas picked up his second goal on a breakaway with 23:03 on the clock. He just missed recording a hat trick less than two minutes later when Nichols robbed him on a point blast.
A minute later, King scored off a low, line drive shot.
Myers capped the scoring with 24 seconds left in the game with a blast from the 10 yard line.
“Our offense looked good up front because we were patient in the middle of the field,” Rockwood first-year head coach Mike Jenner said. “It opened things up in front of them. The play starts in the back. When we control the middle, we are able to move the ball effectively through the final third of the field.”
The Rockets outshot the Blue Jays 20-8. Nichols made eight saves to counterpart John Waltermire’s four saves.
In the first game of the doubleheader Saturday, Rockwood (3-4-1) defeated Johnstown Christian 2-0 in the girls varsity soccer.
Kylie Putman and Katie Ryan scored for the Lady Rockets off assists from Jeannette Metz and Danielle Close. Amanda King earned the shutout in goal.
Seniors honored were Chelsea Beener, Close, Sarah Foy, King, Putman, Katie Miller and statistician Jenni Ansell for the girls and Brad Lemmon, Luke Miller, Lucas, Myers and Waltermire for the boys.
Both Rockwood teams travel to Conemaugh Township Monday for games under the lights.
