Effective Jan. 1 all new unemployment compensation claimants are now required to conduct a job search. This requires registration on the PA CareerLink® system at www.pacareeerlink.state.pa.us.
If you have a definite recall date within 28 days of filing or are in a department approved training, you are exempt from the requirements. You may use any computer with internet access to enroll on the PA CareerLink® website. If you come into the PA CareerLink® Somerset County office, staff will be happy to assist you in the process.
If you work part time and are claiming partial benefits for the week, you are required to apply for two jobs and you do not have to do the activity for the week. If you apply for four or more jobs during the week, you do not have to do the activity. In Option 2, you must maintain an active registration in a union hiring hall. You must keep a record of work search activities and provide that record when requested to do so by the unemployment service center.
A copy of the log is included in your unemployment compensation handbook that you will receive in the mail after filing your initial claim. The PA CareerLink® can provide you copies of the log to record your job search or you may use a notebook or journal to track your job search. You must retain your record for a period of two years. Lastly, if you have any questions regarding your unemployment compensation benefits or the job search requirements, you must call the UC Service Center at 1-888-313-7284.
PA CareerLink® Somerset County will host a series of workshops to assist all customers in their job search. Please call PA CareerLink® Somerset County at 814-445-4161 for any assistance and to schedule a workshop.
