Johnstown—The Greater Johnstown High School Alumni Association is hosting its Fourth Annual All Class Reunion at Lorain Borough Park on July 22.
The idea for the reunion began about four and a half years ago after Richland hosted a similar picnic. The alumni association thought it was a good idea and started to plan one for Greater Johnstown.
Reunions take a lot of planning, which is why many classes do not have them. The all-class reunion is no different.
“Planning is going OK,” Lehman said. “The hardest part of the whole process is trying to get the word out as inexpensively as possible.”
Contacting members of every graduating class is not easy, especially if costs need to stay low. Lehman said there are thousands of graduates who aren’t members of the alumni association, which makes letting them know about the reunion difficult.
“We try to keep the event cost effective and a breakeven kind of event for the alumni,” Lehman said. “One of the most difficult things in the planning of all of it is figuring out how to communicate it to everybody.”
One way to help with the communication of telling fellow classmates is to plan a reunion within the reunion. Lehman said the planning committee would need to knowin advance, but it is possible.
Lehman explained there are many pavilions at Lorain Borough Park that are available. There are a couple of smaller pavilions that can be reserved for reunions within the reunion. This year, one of the smaller pavilions will have a 70th birthday party within one of the graduating classes and the main pavilion will host the entertainment.
The music and entertainment this year features Frank Filia and John Pencola. Filia and Pencola will perform from 2 to 4 p.m. Lehman said Filia and Pencola play at Jazz Along the River and at various venues throughout the city.
“Their music is tailored to the young at heart, or the more senior members. Those who are more from that era of music,” Lehman said.
For those not as young at heart, U.B. the DJ (Bob Weimann) will play a variety of music from 4 to 7 p.m.
If all the dancing to the music builds up an appetite, there will be food available for purchase at the kitchen. Even though food is available, reunion goers are welcome to bring their own food and refreshments. It is a “bring your own beer” event. Other drinks will be available, though.
The park has lots of space for yard games and Lehman encourages people to bring them. She said there is enough room to set up a volleyball net or anything like that. Lehman also suggested people bring their own lawn chairs. The only other seating available is at picnic tables. The alumni association will also have an area where it will sell merchandise and 50/50 tickets.
“The whole idea behind an alumni association is to renew old friendships, build new ones, build camaraderie of all classes of Johnstown High School and support students of today who will be leaders of tomorrow,” Lehman said. “Come to the event and learn more about how to be involved with the association itself.”
For more information, contact Georgia Lehman at 533-5601 ext. 51001, email@example.com or 535-5636. There will be a $5 fee for entrance. The reunion is open to all graduates of Greater Johnstown High School, faculty, family and friends.
