SOMERSET-—Students in grades 6 through 8 in the Somerset Area School District participated in the National Geographic Bee. The contest is designed by the National Geographic Society to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
The top 10 scorers after the preliminary rounds participated in the final round. The finalists were: Brock Bowers, Haley Brown, Austin Clawson, Joe Dunton, Emily Hay, Grant Shoffstall, Chris Silka, Aaron Sleasman, Sara Sredy and Sarah Strope. The two finalists who competed in the championship round were Brock Bowers and Aaron Sleasman. Sleasman was the overall school champion. Austin Clawson placed third.
Sleasman will take the state qualifying test in January to determine if he will qualify to compete in the state competition in March.
