Members of the Boswell community have organized a benefit event to help garner support for Nicole Vinosky-Mullen, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
The event will feature live music provided by Jeff Perigo and Friends and is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. May 25 at the Boswell American Legion. The cover charge will be used to assist in the Boswell resident’s treatment and travel expenses.
“One of her biggest concerns was going to Illinois for her treatment,” her lifelong friend Aimee Nicklow said. “I thought this may be a way to help have someone to go with her.”
Nicklow said Vinosky-Mullen is a very private individual, but decided to organize the event in order to ensure that her mother or her husband could travel with her.
Vinosky-Mullen’s treatment will requires her to fly to Illinois every three weeks and stay for two-to-three days at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America facility.
“That way a caregiver will be there with her,” she said.
Nicklow said Vinosky-Mullen also has a 5-year-old son that needs to be looked after. She was unsure if her husband may need to take time off from work while his wife is away.
“I wasn’t sure about this and I don’t want her to stress out,” Nicklow said. “I just thought every penny might help.”
Access to the event will include food and a cash bar. The event is restricted to people 21 and older.
“Everyone I have mentioned it to has said that is such a great cause,” she said, adding a fellow North Star High School graduate and friend of Vinosky-Mullen’s, Darla Blough, has also helped organize the event.
Perigo, who has organized and performed at several benefits shows in the region throughout his career, said he was on board with the idea as soon as Nicklow asked him about setting up an event.
“I’m going to keep this all acoustic,” he said, adding that he wants to accommodate the venue and keep the music at a reasonable volume.
“It’s more of a social event for people,” he said. “I want to keep it acoustic so people can actually talk to one another without having to yell.”
Perigo said the event will also feature a basket raffle and other fundraising games. Monetary donations and gift basket donations are welcome, Nicklow said.
Nicklow can be reached at 814-233-8100. More information can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/events/549768558379413.
“I just want to express my thanks to everyone involved and for making this benefit happen for her,” Nicklow said.
