DAVIDSVILLE — The Conemaugh Township Indians evened their record at 2-2 by overcoming a tight 7-0 halftime lead while scoring 21 points in the third quarter to put away the pesky Rockwood Rockets 28-0 Friday night.
The only score of the first half came with 5:36 left when quarterback, Bruno Rosa, scampered 19 yards on a 2nd & 10. Rosa was in shotgun formation and darted up the middle and broke left untouched into the end zone.
Ken Domonkos added the PAT kick.
Rockwood managed a drive that started at their own 6 and picked up three first downs, their only ones of the first half to move out to their own 47 before they had to punt.
The Indians used their size advantage to wear down Rockwood's defense to start the second half. Rockwood had 16 players dressed for the game and played tough.
Rosa directed a 6-play, 58-yard drive for a 13-0 lead at 8:20 of the third quarter. He connected with Ryan Shifflett in the right flat for an 18-yard gain to set up a 3-yard run by Tanner Cahill. Cahill also had big gains of 20 and 17 yards in the drive. The Domonkos PAT kick was blocked.
The Indians tried an onside kick which the Rockets recovered, but the defense stopped Joel Ansell for a one-yard loss at midfield and moved for another quick score.
A 15-yard penalty for pass interference against the Rockets on a 1st down pass moved the ball to the Rockwood 36 and the Cahill boys did the rest. Tanner Cahill again scored from the 3 and Rosa added a PAT run for a 21-0 lead with 3:21 left.
Kris Knotts, defensive back for the Indians, returned an errant Rockwood pass 40 yards to set the final score at 28-0 after Domonkos added the PAT kick with 1:23 remaining in the third quarter.
Defensive plays which stood out in the game included Joel Ansell from Rockwood stripping the ball away from Tanner Cahill as he was tackling him to stop the second CT drive; Ansell recovering a CT fumble in the second quarter; Taylor Cahill tipping a Rockwood pass to himself and retrieving it for an interception in the second quarter; Ken Domonkos returning an interception 40 yards — negated by a penalty; Landon Henry recovering the CT onside kick attempt; and Domonkos having yet another interception return of 23 yards.
