Comcast has upgraded Internet service for businesses in the Somerset area.
Bob Grove, spokesman for Comcast Cable, Keystone Region, said that Comcast Business has had a fiber ring available in Somerset for about a year. Recently a line to PBS Coals was added as an extension of that ring.
Comcast Business installed a 300 Megabit per second Ethernet Private Line in Friedens that now runs between PBS Coals' headquarters and its nearby operations building. Comcast also added a 500 Mbps Ethernet Dedicated Internet at PBS headquarters. The update allows the coal company to update the 3D mining maps. Other area businesses now have access to the high-capacity, fiber network.
"It is built out throughout Somerset," he said. "Companies outside of Somerset are able to more easily get the services that they need. Of course, the further out you are the higher the construction costs."
It is extremely fast Internet service, he said, and has built in redundant paths that will keep the data flowing in case of outages. Comcast Ethernet services can be used to connect an organization's multiple offices or branches within a city, such as school districts and medical facilities.
"Businesses have the opportunity to not only increase productivity but also potentially see significant savings," Grove said. "And our network is proprietary, managed by us and physically separate and diverse from the traditional telco providers. Over the years we've been building and investing in our expansive fiber-optic network and we're able to deliver a highly reliable advanced Ethernet-based service that is fully scalable from 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps and enables businesses to have remote Local Area Network connectivity, serve consolidation and data storage, backup and recovery."
