Edgy's football recruiting notes | Top programs to make the rounds during evaluation period

The all-important spring evaluation period began Monday. Look for some top programs to make stops at several schools in the area from now until the end of May.

Colleges are allowed to make two in school visits — one for athletic purposes and another for academic reasons. College coaches also are allowed to make one phone call to recruits during this period.

Coaches from Vanderbilt, USC, Florida, Michigan State, Illinois and Indiana made stops in area schools Monday.

Big weekend ahead for Garrett: Plainfield South junior linebacker Clifton Garrett (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) has a big weekend in store. Garrett will visit LSU on Friday and Alabama on Saturday. Garrett already has an offer from LSU and is hoping Alabama will offer soon.

Garrett said he's starting to look more toward the SEC.

"It's just a different brand of football in the SEC," Garrett said. "I'm starting to shy away from the Big Ten and I'm looking more south."

Garrett has 26 scholarship offers.

Michigan State offers St. Rita's Dawson: St. Rita junior defensive back Lamar Dawson walked away with an offer this weekend after an unofficial visit to Michigan State.

"Michigan State really cares about the players and they offer them a lot of things you just don't see at other schools, like great health care and academic support," Dawson said. "The campus is huge, but everything is also really close together, especially all of the athletic facilities."

Dawson also has offers from Western Michigan and Central Michigan.

Strong Week 2: If you're looking for a great nonconference matchup early in the 2013 season, look no further than Week 2 when Montini will travel to East St. Louis to take on the Flyers as part of the annual City of Champions Classic.

Montini features junior defensive lineman Dylan Thompson (Ohio State recruit) along with junior prospects Nile Sykes (LB/DE), Derrick Curry (DB), Simmie Cobbs (WR) and Alex Wills (QB).

East St Louis will counter with standout junior OLB Kyron Watson (11 offers), junior Missouri commit DB Greg Taylor, junior OT Luther Wright and sophomore DL Terry Beckner Jr. Both schools also have several underclassmen who will draw recruiting looks this spring.

Irish score high with Bunting: Notre Dame scored well with Hinsdale Central tight end Ian Bunting (6-7, 215) after Bunting made an unofficial visit over the weekend.

"(Notre Dame) is definitely up there," Bunting said. "I wanted to just get a chance to talk with the coaches and get a better idea about the offense and how they use the tight end."

Bunting will visit USC on Friday then will fly back and visit Michigan on Saturday and Sunday.

Extra points: Michigan State also recently offered Notre Dame running back Chris James, who also has offers from Arizona State, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Pittsburgh and Western Michigan. ... Crete-Monee junior inside linebacker Nyles Morgan made his first visit to Ole Miss over the weekend, along with teammate and Ole Miss commit Laquon Treadwell. ... Wheaton North junior wide receiver Matt Biegalski added his first offer over the weekend from Illinois State. ... A name to watch during the spring evaluation period is Lincoln-Way North junior Julian Hylton, who has offers from Army, Bucknell and North Dakota.
