Position battle: Kick returner

Eric Weems: The eighth-year vet was back for three of the five kickoffs the Bears received in Friday's exhibition opener. Michael Ford took the other two. Weems had returns of 21 and 23 yards with a touchback mixed in and has an early edge toward winning the job. His explosion in the return game isn't exactly Hester-esque, but Weems' feel for the game and general steadiness aren't lost on special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, reasons he continues to get the most extensive look as the top kick returner. Weems also fair caught his two punt-return attempts Friday.

Chris Williams: Williams, signed last December because of his return potential, never got a chance to bring a kick back Friday before leaving the game with a tweaked right hamstring in the third quarter. That injury, while not severe, could sideline Williams for the rest of training camp and threaten his availability for Thursday's game against the Jaguars. But a glimpse of his speed was obvious on his 73-yard touchdown catch Friday. Asked what he eventually wants to prove as a returner, Williams smiled. "Hopefully I can show a lot of what you saw on that play — that I'm an explosive guy who can get downfield and use my speed as a major advantage."

Seen and heard

Injured players facing a long recovery often don't attend practice, so receiver Marquess Wilson's presence at practice following last week's collarbone surgery has been intriguing. Coach Marc Trestman, however, confirmed Sunday that Wilson's injury is expected to sideline him for part of the regular season. Trestman wouldn't give an exact timetable for Wilson's return.

Try, try again

Cornerback Tim Jennings has twice unsuccessfully attempted to come back from an injured quadriceps during camp. So it qualified as a success when he completed Sunday's practice.

"Basically, you try to get your conditioning back," Jennings said. "That's what camp is about. ... I know I have to just try to ease my way back in there. And I got a couple sprints in here afterward, just trying to get my conditioning up."
