Amazing 20-year-old book club (HANDOUT / December 7, 2011)
The group began when our founding members were turned away from a friend's book club and decided to start their own. Our group is still coed and living predominantly on the North Side of Chicago.
We rotate leadership responsibilities for each meeting.
We hope to meet Richard Powers, a club member's brother-in-law. We have read and enjoyed two of his novels, "Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance" and "The Time of Our Singing."
We have read more than 200 books together and like to mix up our choices between classics, contemporary fiction and nonfiction.
We loved "Blindness" by Jose Saramago for its bleak depiction of what might happen to human society under inhumane conditions.
We didn't enjoy "The Bridges of Madison County" by Robert James Waller as we found it cheap and unsatisfying, similar to a big, unhealthy fast-food meal.
Our next book: "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson.
