  3. Prisons must address transgender realities

In Kevin Rector's blog posting, "LGBT inmates report sexual victimization at much higher percentages" (May 20), he assumes that "other" sexual orientation is transgender. Sexual orientation refers to one's inclination in sexual and romantic partners; gender identity refers to whether one identifies as a man, woman, or other gender.

  7. Cellphones: Preserving a tool, combating a threat

In less than a generation, mobile communications have evolved from a luxury item to an essential element of everyday life. With nearly 7 billion devices in use, mobile communications are nearly ubiquitous, impacting the way we work and live throughout the world every day. As the use of mobile cellular communications continues to expand rapidly, the federal government and Maryland must continue to keep pace with emerging technologies and enact policies that better enable legitimate use of cellphones, while preventing their illegal use.

  9. Setting limits on drones

    It's about time.
It's about time. President Barack Obama's announcement today of new limits on drone strikes and his renewed call to close the terrorist detention center at Guantanamo Bay were badly overdue. The United States has lost much credibility overseas with...

  11. Dwyer should be held to a higher standard

Reading the article on Del. Don Dwyer's boating-while-intoxicated sentence was interesting ("Dwyer sentenced to 30 days in jail in drunken boating incident," May 14). Drinking and boating is playing Russian roulette. If you are in an accident you may survive but you may destroy others lives. He stated that "those who made the laws have an obligation to obey them." When he found out he would have to spend 30 days in jail, his obligation ended. He's appealing his conviction.

  13. Fix city jail by tearing up officers' 'bill of rights'

I have followed national news reports of 13 correctional officer involved in partnership activities with inmates as well as four female correctional officers getting pregnant by inmates ("Alleged gang leader in poor jail conditions, his lawyer says," May 15). No one can deny that this is alarming and disgraceful!

Amid the unfolding jail scandal in Baltimore right now, there are two things relevant to the gay community that I want to bring up.

One of the most catalytic anti-war actions of the Vietnam War happened at 1010 Frederick Road in Catonsville in 1968, but most people wouldn't know it by looking at the building today. Not even two people who were there.
