The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is the largest law enforcement agency in Palm Beach County, Florida. With more than 3,800 employees and 4,300 volunteers, the department provides police services for more than 680,000 residents in the county's unincorporated areas as well as more than 120,000 residents in seven cities and towns. Deputies oversee the county jail system, provide security at the county courthouse in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach International Airport and transport inmates to and from the courthouse and local hospitals. In addition, the agency runs the county's ballistics and serology labs, serves warrants and notifies communities when known sexual predators move in. Also under PBSO control is the military-style Eagle Academy School for troubled teenagers ages 13 to 16, who are taught to raise their self-esteem through fitness and education. The agency's helicopters patrol the county and help local police departments with high-profile crimes. The marine unit patrol enforces boating regulations in the ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway and county's largest lakes, including Lake Okeechobee. Mounted deputies help oversee festivals and major events and patrol in troubled neighborhoods. Detectives assist smaller law-enforcement agencies with homicides, fatal car crashes, internal-affairs investigations and other routine police matters. Investigators from the countywide Violent Crimes Task Force are based at the Sheriff's Office, where they work on gang-related killings and shootings, robberies and other hard-to-solve crimes. With a $370 million budget in 2007, PBSO has expanded in recent years by absorbing police departments in Royal Palm Beach, Mangonia Park, Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay. The agency controls policing in the county's entire Glades region. Ric Bradshaw took over the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in January 2005. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is located at 3228 Gun Club Road, West Palm Beach, Florida, 33406. Call 561-688-3000 or, for further information go to www.pbso.org.
