Ric Bradshaw took over the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in January 2005. Born March 14, 1948, and raised in Lake Worth, Florida, he joined the West Palm Beach Police Department in 1971 and worked his way up to chief in 1996. Ric Bradshaw took over the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in January 2005. Born March 14, 1948, and raised in Lake Worth, Florida, he joined the West Palm Beach Police Department in 1971 and worked his way up to chief in 1996. He defeated former Undersheriff Ken Eggleston by more than 60,000 votes in the sheriff's race in 2004 by campaigning on promises to add more deputies, improve community policing, hold commanders accountable for budgets and make the budget easier to understand. He overcame attacks during the campaign that, as a police chief, he harbored a racially hostile workplace. Since his election, Bradshaw has boosted his agency's community policing, homeland security and, most prominently, anti-gang efforts. Following a rash of gang-relating killings at the end of 2006, he expanded the gang unit and asked federal officials for help in prosecuting hardened criminals. He pushed for the formation of a countywide violent-crimes task force whose detectives investigate homicides, robberies and other hard-to-solve crimes. Bradshaw has given buyouts to senior commanders to trim costs, added staff to the county jail to speed up the booking process, and approved the upgrade of an antiquated computer system. In 2007, facing budget shortfalls, he demanded deputies drive less to save on vehicle-maintenance costs and pulled deputies from some schools. He has presided over his agency's largest expansion in recent years as it absorbed police departments in Royal Palm Beach, Mangonia Park, Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay. He enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing, camping and reading manuals on the latest police technology and best practices. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is the largest law enforcement agency in Palm Beach County, Florida. With more than 3,800 employees and 4,300 volunteers, the department provides police services for more than 680,000 residents in the county's unincorporated areas as well as more than 120,000 residents in seven cities and towns. Deputies oversee the county jail system, provide security at the county courthouse in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach International Airport and transport inmates to and from the courthouse and local hospitals. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is located at 3228 Gun Club Road, West Palm Beach, Florida, 33406.  « Show less
