3. Signs that U.S. gun violence on rise don't bear out in Baltimore

The Wall Street Journal over the weekend used Baltimore and the world-renowned Maryland Shock Trauma Center as the setting for a story saying hospital statistics show gun violence nationwide was “soaring,” and that a continuing national decline in homicides in spite of this trend was improved trauma care.

  9. Health care reform survives

By voting to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.erased concerns that the Supreme Court had become captive to a political rather than a legal agenda. As he promised to do during his confirmation hearings, Chief Justice Roberts in his decision released today crafted a narrow ruling that showed due deference to the other branches of government. In fact, his view of the most controversial element of the law, the so-called individual mandate — a requirement that individuals purchase health insurance or pay a penalty — cut through the political spin of Democrats in Congress and President Barack Obama. They had refused to call the penalty a tax, out of an effort to avoid breaking the president's promise not to raise taxes on the middle class. But Chief Justice Roberts said that's what the provision amounts to, and under Congress' broad powers to levy taxes, it stands.

  13. Who's right about church and state, Kennedy or Santorum?

Much has been written and said recently about the First Amendment and freedom of religion in the context of the current political atmosphere. Many of the most provocative comments have been about contraception, abortion rights and health insurance. Some politicians and pundits claim that President Barack Obama is attacking religion or religious institutions. Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum stoked the fires by criticizing the 1960 speech given by John F. Kennedy when he ran for president. Kennedy, trying to become the first Roman Catholic president, said that he favored the "absolute" separation of church and state. (Unsuccessful Catholic candidate Al Smith had given a similar speech in 1928.)

  15. Who will win Iowa, the most conservative or the most electable?

Now that the seven Republican presidential hopefuls have had their last televised debate before the Jan. 3 Iowa precinct caucuses, they have barely two weeks of on-the-ground campaigning to answer the two key questions facing the voters.

  19. Sexual harassment allegations: Is Herman Cain getting a raw deal?

The report by Politico over the weekend revealing that GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain was accused by two women of sexual harassment while he was CEO of the National Restaurant Association in the mid-1990s has led to swift condemnation -- not of anything Mr. Cain may have done but of the media's appetite for such stories.
