  1. Gun control bill advances in House

Gov. Martin O'Malley's sweeping gun control bill cleared a major hurdle Friday night as two committees sent a ban on assault-style weapons and a new handgun licensing scheme to the House floor.

  3. Let's be grown-ups on gay marriage and assault weapons

Given the lack of interest in Congress in protecting children from guns, it was nice to hear a grown-up in Washington speak on behalf of kids, any kids — in this case, the nearly 40,000 kids who live with same-sex parents in California.

  5. Md. House still 'ruminating' on assault weapons ban

Four weeks after Gov. Martin O'Malley's gun-control bill passed the Senate, a key House committee has yet to schedule a vote and continues to debate whether to scale it back.

  7. The NRA has finally been marginalized

We know that a cigar is generally just a cigar, but the same cannot be said about a gun. For some, a gun is a fetish item protected by the Second Amendment while for others it is simply an extension of manhood. A gun is a lethal weapon which many citizens own and use in a responsible manner.

  9. If not firearms, how about fireworks control?

Let us beat the gun-rights crowd to the punch and agree with them right here and now that firearms aren't the only dangerous devices out there in dire need of greater regulation. It seems that certain types of fireworks may need to be added to that list, too.

  11. Fight against gun violence must go on despite setback in the Senate

I am ashamed to find out that the U.S. Senate has voted to oppose minimal, common-sense gun control legislation ("Defeat leaves gun control backers at a loss for strategy," April 19).
I am ashamed to find out that the U.S. Senate has voted to oppose minimal, common-sense gun control legislation ("Defeat leaves gun control backers at a loss for strategy," April 19). Thankfully, both of our Maryland senators supported these measures,...

  13. Gun vote shows politicians have been bought and paid for by the NRA

The result of the gun control votes in the U.S. Senate sickened me ("Defeat leaves gun control backers at a loss for strategy," April 19).
The result of the gun control votes in the U.S. Senate sickened me ("Defeat leaves gun control backers at a loss for strategy," April 19). It was so simple and would have made people throughout the country who have had their lives turned upside down...

  15. Why should gun nuts prevail?

I am outraged at the hubris of Congress to vote in favor of the out-of-touch NRA over the wishes of the vast majority of the public who elected them ("Tyranny of the minority," April 19).

  17. Citizens must unite to stop the senseless slaughter by gun violence

One sign of being crazy is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. Allowing guns to proliferate on our streets repeatedly has resulted in violence against innocent people, but given the opportunity to do something different, the U.S. Senate has settled on more of the same — which is nothing ("Senate rejects expanded checks on gun purchases," April 18).

  19. When 5-year-olds are shooting 2-year-olds…

It was such a short mention in Thursday's newspaper ("5-year-old accidentally kills sister with own rifle," May 2) that I thought it deserves more attention. Five-year old boy accidentally kills two-year old sister with own rifle! Then it goes on to say that parents bought the rifle as a present for the boy's 5th birthday recently.

  23. A better way to track a bomber

The mayhem in Boston the week of April 15 was a reminder of how an American city can be paralyzed by a homemade bomb. The same kinds of improvised explosive devices that menaced U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan can easily be deployed by freelance terrorists or madmen trying to send a message, incite panic or just create a media spectacle.
