  3. IRS foul-up shows how bad laws breed good scandals

Much to my surprise, I find myself sympathizing with the Internal Revenue Service. Tenderness toward that agency isn't my default position. I'm a British expat living in the United States, with retirement savings locked up in Britain and other cross-border entanglements — these small complications have sometimes caused my dealings with tax professionals to displace landscape photography as my main and most expensive pastime. Say IRS to me and watch my teeth grind.

  9. Can Fort Lauderdale compel background checks at gun show?

A showdown is brewing between Fort Lauderdale and the Ohio-based company that has long held gun shows at the city-owned War Memorial Auditorium. The city has clamped down on the arms-bazaar excesses of the show, and a lawyer for Suncoast Gun Shows say...

  11. NRA draws wrong conclusions from Boston

In the days and weeks after the Boston Marathon bombings, the National Rifle Association has repeatedly stated that many Bostonians who did not possess guns probably wished that they had them in their homes during the tense "shelter in place" manhunt. That statement is in large part a straw-man argument. Much of what occurred during those unfortunate days disproves the NRA's usual narrative about guns and public safety.

  17. Coats defends his vote on guns

Although polls nationwide and in Indiana show overwhelming support for tightening background checks for gun purchases,Sen. Dan Coats, Indiana's Republican senior senator, voted "no." He says most constituents who contacted him wanted him to do just that. In a wide-ranging interview in Mishawaka, Coats said the gun issue broughtmore calls, e-mails and letters to his office -- more than 40,000 -- than received on all other issues combined in the past two years. Coats said more than 75 percent of the messages were in opposition to tighter background checks in the proposal of Sens. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., which died in the Senate after failing to get a required 60 votes.

  21. Florida Gov. Rick Scott should be fired up to sign this reasonable gun bill

It's not often a Florida governor gets caught in the crossfire between gun enthusiasts and the National Rifle Association. Unfortunately, that's where Gov. Rick Scott finds himself, thanks to a reasonable gun-control bill awaiting his signature.

  23. Panicked gun buying and the NRA

I understand that there are about 310 million people living in the United States, and private citizens here own about 300 million firearms. If these figures are even roughly correct, then the gun industry faces the challenge of selling into a saturated market. They clearly have a motive for promoting repeat and multiple sales while repressing any regulations that would slow down the process or discourage the buyer.
