1. Lori's views outside the Catholic mainstream

Archbishop William E. Lori writes that religious freedom is under threat in the United States by the exclusion of religious values from public life ("Religious freedom under threat in U.S.," June 16). This is difficult to understand in Maryland where our leaders include U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Gov. Martin O'Malley, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller and Speaker of the House Michael E. Busch, all of whom are Catholic.

  3. Catholic faith surrounded by threats

Archbishop's William Lori's commentary ("Religious freedom under threat in U.S.," June) reminds me of verses from Lamentations: "my children have become desolate, for the enemy is victorious" (1:16). On Friday, as the Archbishop enters the Basilica to say mass to begin the Fortnight for [Religious] Freedom, he must do so with a heavy heart, for the church is beset with problems, both high and low.

  5. Republicans, choice and pain

Two-thirds of American voters support Roe v. Wade. Women overwhelmingly favored Barack Obama over Mitt Romney, the Republican who wanted to de-fund Planned Parenthood and overturn Roe. Public approval of Congress is at or near its lowest level ever recorded, and public overall has an even worse opinion of the GOP than of Democrats.

  7. The two centers of unaccountable power in America

There are two great centers of unaccountable power in the American political-economic system today -- places where decisions that significantly affect large numbers of Americans are made in secret and are unchecked either by effective democratic oversight or by market competition.

  9. Lori demonstrates the shrinking horizons of Catholicism

In the 1960s, I was young, and it was an exciting time to be Catholic. We fought for freedom and justice. Parishes formed social justice committees, priests were arrested at civil rights demonstrations. The archbishop published a document on racial...

  11. Diversity efforts in lacrosse slow to pay off, but it's a start

When Chazz Woodson, a midfielder for Major League Lacrosse's Ohio Machine, stated recently that a racial epithet had been directed at him three times during his collegiate career at Brown, once by an opposing player and twice by teammates, the old myth about lacrosse resurfaced.

Do you remember Gwynn Oak Junction? Then you may have gone to the movies at what was the Ambassador Theatre, bought your groceries at Schreiber's, purchased your very first Halloween costume at Read's, spent your allowance at Ben Franklin, and gotten your hair styled at Dorothy's Beauty Parlor.

On Friday, Catholics throughout the United States will begin observing two weeks known as the Fortnight for Freedom. For a second consecutive year, the U.S. Catholic Church has set aside this time leading up to Independence Day to draw attention to the need to resist erosions of religious liberty so that faith can continue to enrich our public life.

  17. After jail scandal, spotlight on growing role of women officers

The 19-year-old felt sick to her stomach when she stepped into the Baltimore prison once nicknamed "Supermax" for her first day of work as a corrections officer. The place was dark and dingy, and she had never been around so many men before.

The American clock brings us to the 50th anniversaries of two extraordinary events involving two extraordinary women, Gloria Richardson Dandridge and Madalyn Murray O'Hair — both strong-willed champions of liberty and disturbers of the status quo, but women of very different character, purpose and legacy.
