3. If religion provides no solace, what then?

In the aftermath of the Newtown massacre, people continue to ask the useless question, "Why?" We search for the shooter's "motive," as if we could discover a satisfactory explanation for why a depressed young man would decide to execute his mother, 20 first-graders and six of their teachers.

  7. Apocalypse when now? Doomsday enthusiasts are still holding out hope

Well, 12:01 a.m. came and went (even in Mayan Time, otherwise known as Central Time) and nothing really happened. Although Annapolis was plunged into darkness and bathed in an eerie blue light, BGE assures us it wasn't apocalypse-related. Pessimists are still holding out hope though, guessing maybe it will happen at the end of long day's work right before your Christmas vacation starts.

  11. NRA to America: Blame yourself, not us

After a week of silence following the massacre in Newtown, Conn., the National Rifle Association went on the attack Friday morning, insisting that mass killings are the fault of the media, politicians who pass laws banning firearms from schools, the government's refusal to assemble a database of the mentally ill, the president for eliminating funding for some school safety grants — the fault, in other words, of everybody but the NRA, and the fault of everything except the flood of guns, including high-powered assault weapons, in our society.

  13. New Zealand dodges the Mayan Apocalypse as Miss Maryland gets a promotion

It's the end of the world as we know and New Zealand feels fine. Yup, it's official the Mayan Apocalypse has snubbed Oceanian and the rest of the world will likely make it through Dec. 21 in one piece. (Shocking I know). 15. 'Survivor Philippines' finale recap, Million Dollar Question

We've made it to the finale already; it seems like the season has gone quickly, but then again, if I have to hear Lisa say "I know what I have to do to win, but it goes against everything I believe in ..." I may stab myself in the ear with an ice pick.

  17. Hugging my kids, looking for answers, finding none

Last day of vacation, and my largely ignored to-do list was foremost in my mind. I dropped my sons off at daycare and got some errands taken care of. I came home to attack the pile of laundry that never seems to diminish, took a glance at Facebook, and the world stopped.

  21. Harford schools: 'safety of our students and staff is always our first priority'
