Highlights

Englishman Edward Teach, or Blackbeard, was the most feared pirate in the Caribbean and the New World for only a short time (1713-1718) but his reputation has outlived him. Blackbeard's head was put on a pole in Hampton, Va., after he was killed in 1718 in the hope that the spectacle might turn others away from crime. Up the road in Williamsburg, Va., the colonial capital, some of Blackbeard's crew were tried and hanged, though Captain Blackbeard himself died in a bloody battle at Ocracoke Inlet. A legend says the feared pirate's skull was used as a punchbowl at the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg.
