A lone gunman attacked a Connecticut elementary school just four months ago, renewing a debate on how to control gun violence. On Wednesday, that state’s Legislature began the final steps of passing what advocates call one of the nation’s toughest gun-control laws.

  5. Will tough new gun laws in Connecticut make a difference?

Connecticut is poised to pass the toughest gun laws in the country. Legislative leaders announced Monday that they’d reached bipartisan agreement, and the governor is expected to sign the bill if it passes. Will it make a difference? Will it stop rampage killings like Adam Lanza’s at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December? What’s your view?

  7. Life Out Here: The tyranny of the minority

For years we heard about the “tyranny of the minority.” Right-wingers lamented how “minority groups” or more often “minority thinkers” forced their will upon the majority of us in this nation by citing the...

  13. Let Connecticut gun owners keep their 30-round magazines?

Leaders of the state House and Senate have reportedly reached agreement on a gun bill that will outlaw any ammunition magazines carrying more than 10 bullets. But they have also reportedly agreed to allow those who already own high-capacity magazines to keep them. Adam Lanza used 30-round magazines to kill 20 first-graders and six female educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14; he carried 10 of those magazines into the school. The legislative leaders’ compromise, however, may run afoul of a coalition of parents of Sandy Hook school victims. They’ve called for banning all high-capacity magazines, instead of allowing existing owners to keep theirs. If Lanza had had to stop to reload more often, they say, more children and women might have escaped his bullets. Who’s right?
