An Arlington Heights woman who drowned while saving a 9-year-old boy in a Wisconsin lake last year is among 22 people being honored with a Carnegie Medal for heroism.
Karen Wessel and two other women were watching three children last July when the kids swam across a narrow channel dividing the main shoreline from a sandbar, but became too tired to swim back. The women became exhausted themselves after swimming out to rescue the children.
Wessel swam out to one of the boys, and used her weight to keep him afloat, police said. She disappeared under the water, and when she was found, she had a faint heartbeat. She died after being airlifted to a hospital.
