A man died early this morning after the boat he apparently was piloting on the Fox River near Barrington Hills overturned, authorities said.

The man, 45, was believed to be from Algonquin, but his identity was not being released, pending family notification, said Illinois Conservation Police Capt. Neal Serdar.

A Barrington Hills-area resident heard what he thought was a boating accident about 4 a.m. and called McHenry County police, Serdar said.

Rescue crews from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District were called to a pier near 10350 N. River Road in Barrington Hills about 4:20 a.m. after receiving a call about a boat upside down on a pier, according to a news release.

Crews found a 21-foot Cuddy Cabin boat, upside down and resting half on a pier, according to the release. A man was found about 10 feet from the boat, in the water.

The man was dead on the scene, and divers who searched the water, including using sonar, found no one else in the water, fire officials said. The man found dead was believed to have been piloting the boat, and officials called off a search of the area about noon, Serda said.

The McHenry County coroner’s office was expected to perform an autopsy Monday.
