Icy conditions led to numerous accidents in Lake County this morning, officials said.
A dispatcher for the Lake County Sheriff's Department said police were forced to shut down southbound lanes of Illinois Highway 83 between U.S. Route 45 and Illinois Highway 22 after a rollover accident and several spinouts on the roadway.
An SUV overturned into a ditch at Route 83 and Westmoreland Drive around 6 a.m. after ice froze over the pavement. The condition of the driver was unknown.
Police also closed westbound Route 60 between North St. Mary's Road and Granger Parkway in Mettawa because of numerous spinouts reported there.
Other Lake County municipalities reported accidents caused in part by icy roads. Libertyville, Gurnee and Long Grove were dealing with a handful of accidents.
Officials cautioned drivers to slow down.
