A 22-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition after a car hit him as he was crossing a Near North Side street early this morning in the Streeterville neighborhood.
The victim was walking west across Water Street when he was struck by a 1988 Oldsmobile that was northbound in the 400 block of Columbus Drive about 2 a.m., according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.
The driver, 34-year-old Phillip Beverly of the 7500 block of South King Drive, told police he had a green light and was unable to avoid striking the man because he'd crossed against the light, Estrada said.
The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, suffering from head and torso injuries, Estrada said.
Beverly, who was cited with failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian in the road, was also taken to Northwestern for minor injuries, Estrada said.
