Twelve people were displaced by a fire in the basement of a South Side apartment building this morning, officials said.
The fire started before 6 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Aberdeen Street in the Gresham neighborhood, Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Juan Hernandez said.
One "elderly" woman was checked out by paramedics at the scene but refused medical treatment, Hernandez said.
The cause is under investigation.
