Police shot and wounded a man this morning in the Rogers Park neighborhood, autorities said.

A male was shot in the 1500 block of West Birchwood Avenue about 11:25 a.m., said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Police fired a weapon at that location, confirmed Independent Police Review Authority spoksman Larry Merritt, who had no further information.

The person shot was seriously to critically wounded and was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, said Langford.

Police activity started in about 11:20 a.m. in the 1500 block of West Birchwood Avenue, said Police News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney.

News Affairs would be releasing a statement later, said Sweeney, who declined to release further information.
