Cary Grove High School thrower Ricky Hurley hopes to place in the top five at the state competition as a sophomore.
Holter says that as a sophomore, Hurley “already has the focus and work ethic of a veteran varsity athlete. He outperforms most junior and senior throwers in the area and does so through hard work and dedication to his craft as a thrower.”

How long have you participated in track and field? Since 6th grade.
What do you love most about track and field?
The atmosphere of track, the competition, and how the whole team fits together like a big family. We all become great friends.
What are your goals for this season? How will you achieve them?
To make it to state and place top five at state. I'm more than capable to achieve these goals as long as I maintain my work ethic and focus. The support of my teammates and coaches will ultimately help me achieve these goals.
What are you looking forward to the most this season?
The trip down to state [and] the way it'll feel to compete with the best throwers throughout the state.
Do you have any rituals or superstitions when you play?
No, not really. I just try to have a good attitude and stay focused.
Who inspired you the most in your athletic endeavors?
Coaches Holter, Miller, Psenka, strength and conditioning trainer Mike Spagnola, and Josh Freeman [former teammate and mentor] who really helped me become the thrower I am today.
If you didn't participate in track and field, what would you be doing?
I'd be playing baseball.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Reese Hoffa [American Olympic shot putter], because he’s relatively around my size and an amazing shot putter. He's got a ton of miraculous accomplishments.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?
Dirt biking, lifting, and spending time with friends.
