After weeks of helping back the re-election of freshmen Republican lawmakers around him, the National Republican Congressional Committee has made a large cable television ad buy to assist controversial tea party-backed Republican Rep. Joe Walsh in his race with Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth.
The NRCC confirmed it is pumping about $457,800 into the race to buy time on cable stations in the northwest suburban district. The spots will run Oct. 5 through Election Day, as first reported by the Washington, D.C.-based publication, Roll Call.
The investment comes on top of more than $1 million in support Walsh has received from super political action committees in the last week.
The bulk of that comes from the conservative Now or Never PAC, based in Missouri, and FreedomWorks, run by former House Republican Leader Dick Armey of Texas.
The out-of-state cash comes despite frequent criticism by Walsh that the bulk of Duckworth’s donors come from outside Illinois.
Duckworth, a former state and federal veterans affairs official from Hoffman Estates, is challenging freshman Walsh in the Nov. 6 election for Illinois’ new 8th Congressional District seat in the north and northwest suburbs.
The contest is nationally watched, given Duckworth’s ties to top Democrats including President Barack Obama and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Springfield and Walsh’s status as a tea party icon.
